Abstracting Water:
Stone Mountain Reflections
What cameras can be used for this class?
Any Camera!
DSLR, Mirrorless, Smartphone, Film
Transform reflections, ripples, and light into striking abstract images in this hands-on outdoor workshop at Stone Mountain’s lake. Designed for photographers of all skill levels who want to explore creative ways to see water, this class focuses on composition, motion, and light to turn ordinary scenes into artful abstractions.
One of the great joys of photographing in the fall is finding great colors reflected in lakes and streams. Join nature photographer Larry Winslett at Stone Mountain Park for an afternoon of photographing reflections along the Park’s Lakes.
The Park’s many lakes, bordered by diverse hardwood forest, make it a natural place for this type of photography. Larry will show you some of the best spots and techniques for capturing these types of images.
We will also likely encounter some of the Parks’ many geese and ducks so bring your long lens too!
What you’ll learn
How to read water: identifying patterns, textures, and reflections that translate into strong abstract compositions.
Creative camera settings: using shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and focal length to emphasize motion or freeze detail.
Intentional blur and long exposures: techniques for silky smooth surfaces and painterly streaks with neutral density and polarizing filters.
Focus and depth play: selective focus, bokeh, and using foreground/background elements to simplify or fragment the scene.
Color, contrast, and negative space: building mood through palette and minimal composition.
Why this workshop is different: We don’t just teach settings—we teach seeing. You’ll leave with a fresh way to approach water as a subject, a portfolio of abstract images made during the session, and practical techniques you can use anywhere water appears: lakes, puddles, fountains, and wet streets.
Who should attend: Photographers who want to expand their creative toolkit, experiment beyond literal landscapes, or add evocative abstract images to their portfolio. Beginners are welcome; all technical instruction will be explained in plain language.
This workshop will involve some light hiking.
