Smartphone Photography
at the Atlanta Botanical Garden
Throughout the session, we'll touch on light, focus, and simple in-app editing adjustments to help your photos hold their color and detail once you're home. No special equipment is required, just your smartphone and a sense of curiosity.
By the end of the workshop, you'll leave with a stronger eye for composition, a set of techniques you can use anywhere in nature, and a memory card (or camera roll) full of garden-fresh images.
Spend a beautiful evening learning to see the Garden the way your camera does. This hands-on workshop walks you through the techniques that turn ordinary phone snapshots into striking botanical images, set against one of Atlanta's most photogenic backdrops, including time in the Garden's stunning Orchid Display House.
You'll learn how to use your phone's native macro or close-up mode (or simple clip-on lenses, if you have them) to capture the fine detail in petals, stamens, and leaf textures that the eye often overlooks. We'll cover composition techniques tailored to flowers and foliage, including framing for color harmony and contrast, using negative space, and finding patterns in nature. Inside the Orchid Room, you'll practice working with humidity, mixed lighting, and tight, intricate subjects, conditions that reward a slower, more deliberate approach to shooting.
This is a hands-on workshop. Registered students are asked to bring their phone and a charger to this class. You'll have the option to download a free editing app, so have your Apple/Google Play/etc account password available.
