What We'll Cover:

  • Lighting & Exposure — How to set up and adjust studio light for pets of all coat colors and textures, with special focus on the unique challenge of photographing dark or all-black dogs without losing detail in their fur

  • Posing — How to guide and encourage natural, expressive poses without stressing your subject — because pets don't take direction the way humans do

  • Pet Handling — Practical techniques for keeping animals calm, engaged, and cooperative in a studio environment, whether you're working with your own pet or someone else's

  • Composition — Framing, angles, and background choices that put the focus where it belongs — on your pet's personality

  • Focusing — How to nail sharp focus on fast-moving, unpredictable subjects, including eye focus techniques that bring portraits to life

  • Editing in Lightroom — A walkthrough of Sara's post-processing workflow, from basic exposure corrections to bringing out fur detail and achieving a polished, professional finish

Great pet photos don't happen by accident — they happen when you know where to put the light, how to read your subject, and how to work fast enough to catch the moment before it's gone. In this hands-on studio workshop, Sara Keith, Director of the Atlanta School of Photography and the talent behind Sara Keith Studios, pulls back the curtain on everything she's learned shooting four-legged subjects professionally.

Sara will be joined by her best friend and seasoned pet model, Doug, who'll serve as your willing (and occasionally wiggly) subject for the evening. You'll get real studio time behind the camera, guided instruction, and the kind of candid insight that only comes from someone who has spent years figuring out what works — and what sends a dog running in the opposite direction.

You'll walk away with a memory card full of great shots, a clear workflow you can repeat at home, and — most importantly — the confidence to pick up your camera and make your own pet portraits something worth framing.
