One-Light

Portrait Photography

What cameras can be used for this class?

Digital DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras

What you'll practice:
• Place and angle one light to bring shape and dimension to the face.
• Adjust light size and distance for softer or stronger shadows.
• Balance camera exposure and flash output while keeping the eyes in focus.
• Use a reflector or black board to control contrast without adding another powered light.
• Troubleshoot dark eye sockets, bright skin highlights and distracting backgrounds.

Leave with a clearer way to set up one light, evaluate your result and choose what to change next.

Stop guessing where to put your light. Learn how a single light can shape a face, bring attention to the eyes and give your portraits a more intentional look. Join Jay Batchler at Atlanta School of Photography in Old Fourth Ward for demonstrations, guided shooting and a practical process you can repeat.

Watch how moving the light changes the photograph, then put those decisions into practice. Learn to check the face, judge the shadows and make one useful adjustment at a time.
