Join wildlife photographer Don Orkoskey and discover the hidden world of macro photography. Think you've photographed everything your local parks have to offer? Think again. Some of nature's most fascinating subjects are hiding in plain sight. You just need to know where to look!
We'll explore the beautiful Blue Heron Nature Preserve where Don will show you how to find captivating insects, flowers, fungi, textures, and other tiny wonders that most people walk right past. Along the way, you'll learn how to recognize promising subjects and compose photographs that reveal extraordinary detail.
Don will demonstrate techniques for creating sharp, eye-catching macro images, including how to work with natural light, overcome common close-up photography challenges, and make compelling photographs with the equipment you already own. He'll also discuss when specialized macro gear can help and when it isn't necessary.
The time we spend photographing in the field will give you plenty of opportunities to practice your new skills while receiving personalized guidance and feedback.
This workshop is open to photographers of all experience levels. Whether you're picking up a camera for the first time or looking for fresh inspiration after years behind the lens. You'll leave seeing nature and the photographic opportunities all around you in a completely new way.

This workshop will be held at the beautiful Blue Heron Nature Preserve.
Nestled in Atlanta’s North Buckhead neighborhood, Blue Heron Nature Preserve is home to the 3-mile Blueway Trail which allows visitors to experience 30 acres of woodlands, wetlands, riparian areas and meadows – all without leaving the city.

Don Orkoskey
Don Orkoskey specializes in headshots and corporate photography. He's also a passionate wildlife photographer and leads a free monthly nature photography meetup. From long before he can remember Don had a camera in hand, from his mom's Polaroid 600 to his Pentax K1000 he bought for a high school photography class. He opened WDO Photography in 2007 after working for and learning from a number of Pittsburgh's most talented photographers. He began teaching photography around the same time, hosting classes at Phipps Conservatory, the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, and at many more great venues in and beyond Pittsburgh. Today, Don is exploring wild spaces in and around Atlanta looking for wildlife to photograph and he leads a free monthly nature photography meetup.

What do I need for this workshop?
A Macro Lens

A tripod or monopod is helpful but not needed
No strong perfumes, shampoos, deodorants, or other strong smelling stuff.
Camo isn't necessary but drab colored clothes are recommended, as is dressing for the weather
Warm boots that are water resistant should there be rain (or worse)
If it's raining, rain covers for yourself (poncho, jacket with a hood, etc) and for your gear are highly recommended - inexpensive plastic camera covers are available online.
