Camera Scanning, Editing and Archiving

Film Negatives

with Caleb LeBourgeois

Having a trusted lab is great, but sometimes you need more control over your image. If you are getting into developing film at home, a necessary step is getting great scans. This workshop will cover scanning your negatives at home with your digital camera, editing lab scans, upscaling for printing, negative conversion, and negative archiving.

Join our hands-on workshop and learn how to scan your negatives at home using the gear you already own: your digital camera, a simple light source, and a few clever tricks.

What you’ll get

  • Camera-based scanning made simple: Step-by-step setup for capturing clean, consistent scans with your DSLR or mirrorless camera.

  • Smart editing for lab scans: Turn raw captures into polished images. We’ll show you a fast, repeatable workflow in Lightroom and Photoshop to correct color, exposure, contrast, and film base tint from typical lab scans.

  • Negative conversion that actually looks like film: Learn both automatic and manual methods to invert negatives and preserve grain, tonality, and color character. Get pro tips for handling color negatives, black-and-white negatives, and pushed/pulled exposures.

  • Upscaling for printing: Want big prints? We’ll teach you safe sharpening, noise control, and upscaling strategies so your scans hold up at large sizes.

  • Archiving and file management: Create a reliable, searchable archive. We cover naming conventions, metadata, file formats, lossless backups, and best practices for long-term storage so your negatives and scans stay safe and useful.
